A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
